Like you’re stuck somewhere between Gregory Crewdson and Edward Hopper on bad fit antipsychotics that drain the color from the world. Like a Wes Anderson film if Michael Haneke was his mentor.
The world as a brutalist hellscape of loneliness, disconnection, violence and decay, haunted by its characters (literally and figuratively).
It’s also strangely goofy, in its own supremely deadpan way. (I probably shouldn’t have laughed so hard at the sacrifice scene)

the plot is pretty standard revenge exploitation flick but…
the costumes! the sets! the lighting! it’s very theatrical. the stillness of the trees. the canned nature sounds. the unnatural way water runs off the bark and the roofs. mist permeates, blood runs giallo red. the compositions are beautiful and ayako wakao is so good at being hot and evil i wanted her to go on orchestrating the deaths of men forever.
