This is a dark, twisted, deeply hilarious film. The performances are, for the most part, delightfully understated. The antics on display are ridiculous, and unbelievable when juxtaposed with the cruelty and avarice on display. Steve Buscemi steals the show here, exemplifying both the lighter and heavier themes present.

I watched this film with my boyfriend. It's one of his all-time favorites. It seemed interesting but mostly I was doing it as a favor.
However, less than 2 minutes in I realized I was watching a Masaaki Yuasa film. I was elated. And for good reason. For all the weirdness, variety, and intensity of Yuasa's more contemporary work, this is all the more so. I imagine I'll spend quite some time unpacking it.
