  Ridley Scott is in full control here, portraying Rome in full glory, complete with the flamboyance and colour that was only glimpsed in the first film. You can see the whole budget and the film looks great.

  Unfortunately, his efforts are in service of a return-to-status-quo script that wants to diminish Maximus' accomplishments from the first film so we can do it all again almost beat for beat.

  It is another one of these sequels that's actually a remake. What a waste.

  Sam Raimi brings his signature Evil Dead camera work and sound design to a genre that was forged in this sort of boldness. Really fun movie with a stacked cast. Doesn't waste the young talent, even though they hadn't blown up yet.
