I've never seen a movie quite like this before - and I've seen a hell of a lot of movies. It's minimalist, with muttered dialogue, a discordant score, a confusing plot, but none of that matters because each moment is so brilliantly composed and full of dread and shock. The violence is disturbing in its efficiency and straightforward-ness. Nothing is wasted in any of the shots, and so many brief moments reveal a thousand more stories (the woman on the…

Saw this back in the 70's, when I was a wee child, on a big screen at a revival house. Was kind of bored, didn't get it.

Terrific opening, but kind of lost interest as it went on… and knew ultimately where it was headed.

    Oscar Nominee Documentary Short

Serviceable documentary about the China/Taiwan conflict, but lacking lots of details and not enough of the human struggle. Beautifully shot and edited, but not very engaging. Another in a series of Oscar doc nominees that are simply video diaries, without a ton of structure or narrative depth to them.

Fig, short for Figueroa, is an L.A. street where nothing good happens in Ryan Coogler’s second film. Raw, riveting, anxiety-inducing, and heartbreaking. So much emotion, such high stakes created in a too-brief 15 minutes.

A kind of interesting concept, but it feels long and not one laugh or “feel” - these SparkShorts are real hit or miss.
