So the Director apparently thought this film was about respecting your elders?? And he joins the original writer, who this story is based on, in confirming that the death of the little girl is the Seita’s fault? The atmosphere of The Lighthouse oozes into pretty much every area of its production, from the aspect ratio and the orthochromatic film to the sound design and concoction of symbolism utilized. To those who aren’t familiar with the story of Joseph or with the basic history of 18th Dynasty Egypt, this movie would make absolutely no sense, which I see as maybe it’s largest shortcoming, though the cinematography, set design, costume design and (to a lesser extent) soundtrack are so beautiful that it’s hard not to get lost with it. A progressive movie with an interesting take on the aforementioned story, this reminds me of how much Egyptian cinema has regressed.
