A Brighter Summer Day 1991
I found Yi Yi to be engrossing, with a richly woven narrative and excellent performances but a film that stopped short of transcendent. Feel p much exactly the same about this.

Poor Things 2023
Behind the steampunk pyrotechnics, surgery detail and slappy, grunty sex is a surprisingly conventional, almost Austen-esque coming of age story. Loved the worldbuilding, Lanthimos’ confident handle on the source material and a career-best Emma Stone, perfectly rendering Bella’s strange locution and duck-like gait. Haven’t seen an actress inhabit a role so physically since Emily Watson in Breaking the Waves. At 2 1/2 hours, certain elements start to grate, notably the “edgy” swearing and the film’s curious disinterest in the psychology of Dafoe’s character. But in general, I’m down for a film that’s this outwardly horny and outrageous.
