  What is the role of children in the film? Tarkovsky begins with an intimate encounter between two young children who run off. Then, the pre-lift-off scene includes a child in the back seat of a car. The latter scene intrigues me the most because this scene is Kris’ final assertion that he is going to space. But, the child appears in a dream like space where the film stock itself has been recolored or distorted in some way. I am curious to read other considerations on the role of children in this specific scene and perhaps some views on the highway sequence.
