This is one of the most infuriating films I've ever watched simply because it's almost perfect. The second act is a flavorful mixture of southern gothic, expressionism and Robert Mitchum dominating every scene he is in. If I was told Flannery O'Connor wrote the second act, I'd believe it without a second thought. Though the plot wasn't as tense and anxiety filled as I was hoping a British film released during the rise of Nazi Germany would feel, it does work as a preview for Hitchcock's later stylistic markers. From what I can tell, this film birthed the "Bomb Theory" Hitchcock offered up during his interview by Francois Truffaut (which incidentally is also on Criterion Channel and which I'll be watching on a later date).
