A successful resurrection of the Biblical Epic genre flavored with just the right amount of blaxploitation flair that takes an initially vapid character on a profound journey through doubt and faith. Although some may balk at the liberties taken while others jeer at its failure to push boundaries, The Book of Clarence manages to strike a chord of thoughtful exploration in an age of ideological polarization.
The greater the flick, the bigger the trick. Argylle mixes up a cocktail of entertainment that mostly sustains itself for its 140 minute runtime. Despite occasional overindulgence in its absurd situations, Vaughn successfully subverts genre tropes while playfully embracing them to serve up something both familiar and fresh. As the ride returns to the station, though, the film lands hard on its own post-credit punch line, holding everything and leaving the audience without much more than the stylistic garnish. All…
A trite treatment of the source material that lacks the allusive quality of the novelization. However, the adherence to a Nosferatu-like vision of the vampire's visage is a welcome inclusion. Unfortunately, it lands as a prosaic exploration of what could have been a compelling premise.
