The more I think about this film, the more irritated I am, and I become more convinced that not only did I not enjoy the movie, it actually is a poorly made movie. This is a 90 minute movie that has a flashback sequence before the halfway mark to things that happened earlier, as if viewers can't even remember that far back.

Such a fascinating concept, bringing 1940s Marlowe into the LA of the early 70s, and it works a lot better than I would have expected. Let's credit Altman. The opening sequence is hilarious, and the final sequence is tragic and beautiful. In between we get a loner trying to find the way to do the right thing, in a world that has no interest in "the right thing".
