Very efficient, spare, and workmanlike filmmaking, all meant as unqualified compliments. Good performances, too.
I enjoyed the unsentimental perspective. While the story hews close to Hays Code-aligned expectations, it avoids moralizing, with just little glimmers of an economic theme. The ending isn't as neatly executed as the rest of the film, so the air comes out of the tires at the end. The movie may have wanted to end differently.
