Very efficient, spare, and workmanlike filmmaking, all meant as unqualified compliments. Good performances, too.

I enjoyed the unsentimental perspective. While the story hews close to Hays Code-aligned expectations, it avoids moralizing, with just little glimmers of an economic theme. The ending isn't as neatly executed as the rest of the film, so the air comes out of the tires at the end. The movie may have wanted to end differently.

I especially enjoyed the honest, human performances. There's also some extremely interesting editing; little attention is given to establishing time and place when moving through the scenes, and there was something very refreshing and captivating about that.
