More relevant than ever

Major pacing problems, but the ideas, humor, and design outweighed the flaws for me. I’m trying to imagine this film without the Ruffalo and Colette characters. They just weren’t that interesting, and their specificity felt like a distraction from the larger point about extractive economies. But Pattison was amazing. This one will stick with me. Shades of 12 Monkeys.

Creepy, entertaining, Hugh Grant having the time of his life, and props for bringing Topher Grace back only to give the pamphlet rather than to save the girls. Genius, hilarious choice.

A terrific homage to classic gangster films with a great big dollop of Coen absurdity. The rumble of thunder, fire, hell permeates the soundscape, calling to mind questions of loyalty, character, and uhhh ethics.
