Loved the premise. Hugh Grant is really great. But it all starts feeling a little tiring by the third act. Too much telling and explaining. I guess just like religion it got boring.

Could totally see this working as a play. Same was a Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom. Those settings are tight and the dialogue flows fast. But I didn’t connect with their story of loss and grief and hardship. Samuel L. Jackson was effortless in this.

Full disclosure: I’m a Spiritist so I buy into this story from the beginning. As a Spiritist it’s nice to see the representation of my beliefs. From a cinematic  standpoint, it has flaws. The film never quite makes you a believer if you’re not one to begin with. And I think that’s its major flaw. I’m not talking about converting people to Spiritism, but if I’m a viewer, and I never heard of it, I want the story to make me strongly consider the possibilities. And it doesn’t do that. Hope this someday gets the treatment it deserves.

A wild ride. Evoked Kill Bill for me, but not as neatly developed. I wish there was a lot more Sofia fighting in it. She’s amazing. Nic is a national treasure (pun intended), and he can represent the US anytime in these East meets West movies, as far as I’m concerned.
