The Father 2020
Could've so easily been a generic sappy melodrama under the wrong hands, but instead we have a masterpiece of a film which handles its subject matter with care and utilizes cinematic elements like editing, production design, and cinematography to elevate the stage play it was based on. There's just so much to take in at once, one second I was grinning at Anthony's goofy antics, suddenly I'm scared shitless like it's a horror movie, and by the end of the film I'm left in shambles. Growing old is such a universal human concern, it's no wonder this film resonated with so many people.

Babylon 2022
Yes, I am a proud Babylon apologist. The more I think about this film, the more I'm amazed by how Damien Chazelle managed to pull it off. Chazelle is one hell of a dreamer—you can tell by how his films often center around protagonists with big dreams—but with Babylon, he asserts his own identity as one too. It's such an self-indulgent auteur move to spend 80 million dollars to make his own "love letter to cinema" movie, but I eat…

La La Land 2016
Haven’t seen this in almost five years and boy does it hold up real well. Us humans and our dreams, how beautiful can we be, huh.
Watched with a live orchestra conducted by Justin Hurwitz.

I'm Still Here 2024
Makes sense to find out that this was adapted from Marcelo Rubens Paiva's memoir of the same name, because there was so much empathy given not just to Eunice and Rubens, but their children too. The glances of Eunice in the shower and the ice cream shop to Vera's camera footage, and of course, that heartbreaking exchange between Marcelo and Babiu about when they "buried" their father.
Fernanda Torres, of course, is outstanding in this. Her Eunice is towering and all-encompassing, as a fearless mother and wife, but also as her own person fighting against Brazil's military dictatorship.

The Squid and the Whale 2005
Noah Baumbach has an inexplicable talent of depicting unlikeable characters going through mundane issues in such a refreshingly raw and earnest manner. The Squid and the Whale is one of the simplest indie films I've seen, but it's definitely not deprived of emotional depth, thanks to Baumbach's intimate writing. This is gonna stick with me for a while.
