Santoshi Kon has masterful sensibilities as a filmmaker but this one just… missed. The animation, sound design and overall craft of the film is spectacular, it looks incomparably beautiful. But this film as opposed to the achingly fragile ‘Perfectly Blue’ is just “throw everything to the wall and hope it sticks”. The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie 1972
A dizzying parable on adulthood, hypocrisy and the greed for more (and perhaps a lot else too). The film walks the narrow line between haunting and hilarious, resulting in a hypnotic film that makes you look for something in its every passing moment. Films this beautiful, visually are simply not made anymore, with Būnuel’s absolutely entrancing blocking, lighting and shot-compositions. Every single scene looks so sumptuous and overwhelming in its beauty. There’s so much to take away from this film, and I hope to revisit it every so often.

I feel like I’m watching a different show to everyone, because this is so fun.
Richa Chadha turns in her career-best here, with her mujra being the highlight of the show. The visuals of it were simply intoxicating. Manisha Koirala is delightfully unhinged, like a sort-of Olivia Coleman in ‘The Favourite’ meets Meryl in ‘The Devil Wears Prada’.
