  the first (and possibly last time since today) that i watched this was over 15 years ago. i remember feeling SO emotionally devastated but also confused why i felt like such a wreck after this… and i thought i could never watch this again.. until today.. i see this on hbo max and holy shit. it’s three hours. it’s a 3 hour movie about a giant ape and it has naomi watts, adrien brody, AND jack black. i don’t know why i was so confused .. how the fuck do you NOT get emotionally invested in this

  i thought it was quick & as a piece of mindless, sometimes comedic entertainment it was fine… but it just felt… exploitative?? confused tonally? reductive??

  like ok he’s trying to paint her as sooooo complex & multidimensional… she’ll initiate, provoke, she doesn’t know why or fully understand herself… she’ll sob and break down after putting up her typical strong front…because… she’s smart, she’s confused, she’s empowered, she’s fighting for herself, but wait.. she’s also fighting against herself, she knows when to get…
