Regrouping 1976
one might have to be in a certain kind of headspace for a lizzie borden film, and i think i was in one - wondering about how women think about being women in the world. interesting, boring, long, short, but i resisted the impulse to pick up my phone - to just sit with the film’s attempt to understand its own process. very self-referential but very revealing about how hard it is to make films “about” things.

Love Hurts 2025
i didn’t think i would ever use a two star rating for anything… there are movies that are so bad they’re good and some that are so bad it’s sad - ke huy quan was wasted talent in this film, which was so badly edited i cannot believe it made it to theatrical release at all. also they definitely styled ariana dubose to look extra like meghan markle down to the eye makeup which was very unsettling. i went to just vibe with a cheesy ridiculous movie and it did not deliver at all

a movie i can never remember the twists of and is always shocking anew - last memory of watching it is a midnight screening at the angelika on houston and walking out at 4 am shellshocked… the perfect foil too to the ferrante world, because in don corleone’s worldview, “women and children can afford to be careless, but not men,” where ferrante’s men are often weak and foolish.

watched in university theater, an ideal screening situation, and it was reasonably enjoyable, but mostly disorienting in an incoherent way - which can be pleasurable sometimes but did not sustain pleasure for me in this instance. also music choices very weird. trying to say i could see why people like it but i don’t really feel it myself
