Loved the dark and dank look of the movie, showcasing the life and feel of Detroit around 8 Mile Road. I know a bit of Eminem's real life story, so it was fun trying to find those loose similarities between it and Rabbit. I thought the finale ended a little too soon and would've loved to see more back and forth in the battle, but I get that it closes a loop from the beginning, and that Rabbit had to get back to the factory 🏃♂️
Someone said this was like John Wick but I guess I was bamboozled. I like Mulligan and thought she did was wonderful job in a role I'd never expected of her. But the messaging was a little ham-fisted and the story/events didn't really add much to be more entertaining.
I love movies, loved making movies, love samurai, so this movie immediately clicked no matter how sketchy it looked in the beginning. It's message is clear, with character passages and decisions that are deliberate and to the point. But with that straight forwardness I knew what to expect even if I wasn't expecting how well it was going to be pulled off. Emotionally engaging and filled with entertaining performances, this was a wonderful surprise. The ending was very cathartic.
Figured this was going to be a dance movie that I would watch with glazed eyes, but it turned out to be quite a roller coaster. What I thought was going to just be a movie about youth/preteen identity and sexuality became that and much much more. It touched gender roles and expectations, the side effects of the absence of a mother figure, elegance and aggression, aggressive elegance, and the bottom line that everyone is masculine and feminine. For the first time, I felt a rush from and was moved by the dancing. The final act was so good.
