I went in as a hater because I found the trailer annoying and felt like this wouldn't come close to Sam Rockwell's clones in Moon, so I came out of the film thoroughly entertained. I found myself enjoying it so much that I was slightly let down by the conventional blockbuster final act - the story really felt like it could go anywhere, maybe somewhere new, until it was neatly tied together with a bow.

I really loved this film and never wanted it to end. It is structured around a daily routine and nightly dreams, music, toilets and tall icy beverages in familiar bars. As a man of few words, much of our insight into Hirayama’s life comes from the job he takes pride in, the cassettes he plays in his car and the trees he sits beneath to eat lunch. Despite the rigid routine he observes, there is a strong sense of comfort…
A slow but short movie that feels more occupied with the journey than the characters. Although Lily Franky brings a good performance as a man who has disconnected from the world following the death of his wife, the present day road, rail and bike trip feels quite disconnected from the past they shared.
