Promising Young Woman 2020
Huge misfire in my books. Disappointed that this film has been labelled as “feminist” and is getting attention from critics and the Academy. Even more shocked that it was written and directed by a woman. It almost felt at points that maybe this film was going in a potentially hopeful direction, but unfortunately it could never commit to its messages (especially at the end).
I also think it speaks volumes that Bo Burnham’s character always wore blue while Casey Mulligan was in pink in every scene together #gendernorms.

Can’t believe I waited 3 years to see this. Every beat is spot on and mesmerizing. This incredibly intelligent film is just a smidge before it’s time — I think it would’ve killed it at the 2019 Oscars.

Her 2013
Her is similar to The Invisible Man’s mantra “what you can’t see can hurt you” but much less gruesome. We never see Samantha, but boy was there some aching in this film. Joaquin Phoenix is remarkable — no denying that. I love the romantic colour pallet and score that mixes in beautifully.
