It seems like reception is mixed on this one, but I loved it. Mickey17 is wild, unpredictable, hilarious, absurd, and even occasionally touching. That so many plot threads were successfully juggled is impressive; the synopsis of this film by itself would be bewildering.
And yet for the most part, it works. Like Snowpiercer, it takes an almost stoner-esque premise and expounds on it in fun and satisfying ways. You have to be willing to accept the occasional silly wink or…
The movie's central device (told from first person POV) is both its strength and its flaw. Scenes play out like memories, formed together like a collage, overlapping but not always with full context. I found this invigorating at first, but eventually tiresome and disorienting.
The look and feel of the film is not without justification, and makes more sense in retrospect than it does on first viewing. Ones enjoyment might be contingent on how much they resist the films dreamlike…
