Saboteur 1942
Is this the most underrated Hitchcock movie because of the fact that it’s clearly a NXNW dry run? Understandable, I guess but the cinematography, set pieces, huge cast of memorable characters and mixing of genres here is all so so good. Would be the best movie most other directors ever made by a good amount. You know Hitch is a GOAT when he’s able to look back at something as fun and technically accomplished as this and essentially dismiss it as a flawed experiment.

There’s a scene early in Husbands where Casavettes, Falk and Gazzara hold a drunken singing contest. As often happens with drunks, it starts out cordial and eventually devolves into combativeness. The scene culminates with what feels like an endless sequence of the men mercilessly harassing a woman who tries to join in. Casavettes holds the camera completely still, refusing to cut away for what feels like an eternity.
