My main issue with this movie was plot: Everything moved slowly, and normally I would love that, because I’m a sucker for slow stories. But the reason I love the slow mood in film is because it emphasizes mundanity, melancholy, futility, and other heavier feelings associated with realist techniques. Yet Safety Not Guaranteed aims for some humor or sarcasm by leaning into archetypes and ultimately builds a non-realist world, so rather than heightening my emotions, the slow pace left me frustrated…
