Things oftentimes appear sweet through the lens of a child's perspective, and this film is no different -- visually beautiful with rich sound and a story framed by our child protagonist; this film feels sparse, but not lacking in depth, and it speaks the most in silent moments and expressions. Subtle, but intricate and grounded. The few musical moments in this film are the icing on the cake for me. This film did not disappoint.

Padre Padrone 1977
This film was definitely something of a relatable one for me — although the struggles therein far more resemble those of my grandparents, parents … the emotions and circumstance remain much the same across time, culture, space.
The framing of this film, with the author’s original commentary at the beginning and end - combined with the presentation of the story itself - are memorable and engaging, allowing a full suspension of ourselves in its world.

My Beautiful Laundrette 1985
This is what romantic films should aspire to be. While I’m not always a fan of slushy titles that leave us with happy endings, this film left me feeling warm and fuzzy. Touching on complex subject matter without bogging itself down, it’s a standout.
