The biggest mystery is how this isn’t a Wes Anderson film

There’s every chance that you might hate this film because it is, at points, all over the place. Shifting genres, flitting between sci fi and the philosophical. Characters turned up to 11 (praise be for Mark Ruffalo) and giant alien woodlouse type creatures. If it sounds like a lot it’s because it is. However while I tried to settle in to the film I found d myself really enjoying it and another excellent strange little addition to the Bong Joon Ho canon that I will definitely return to.

As an Ed Wood film, this is still a messy affair at times and yet, when we consider the position in the 50s on these issues, progressive, brave and daring.

A 2025 viewing shows parts of this to be extremely dated in its views and considerations but at the time it may have been radical cinema.

One of the greatest films ever made?

One of the 'great texts' of cinema?

I'm not sure where I fall on this, but this dreamscape left me wondering if anything on screen was real or just a dream. In many ways, that's the magic of cinema, and exactly what Guido wishes to create.
