This is a tough one for me because I think the part in the middle with everyone (except for the pilots) being older and building a community and Rei’s search for identity and finding meaning is the high water mark for Evangelion as a franchise, but I also think the final act is messy and bad. I also think the move to 3d models means that all of the Eva’s feel so weightless and lacking the physicality of EoE or the series.
I liked this. I respect that Guardians of the Galaxy opened the door to Marvel movies getting increasingly weird, and this may be the pinnacle of that. At its heart this is a conventional story that mashes together “power corrupts” with “what if I’d done things differently?” and a dash of “coming of age”, but filtered through a lens of Sam Raimi angles. I wish he could have gone all out, but recognize the studio’s touch on these things and…
I really wanted to like this one. The premise is great. The visual metaphor for dysphoria is basically perfect. The rest of the movie is such a slow burn that I’m pretty sure it went out somewhere back there and I’m waiting for fireworks that are never going to come.
