Charles Burnett wanted to reflect a community without „imposing his views“ as he felt many other fellow students at UCLA were romanticising the working class with their simplistic movies. His slice-of-life approach makes Killer of Sheep authentic and truthful to what Burnett set out to do. It’s touching but very difficult to rate. It would probably mean a lot more to me if I grew up in the L.A. area.

Amadeus 1984
Amadeus shows how occasionally great biopics can be. F. Murray Abraham gives a beautifully complex performance. This Salieri is somebody so turmoiled by admiration and jealousy for Mozart’s genius; it is the dramatic frame of the movie which Abraham effortlessly holds together. And Forman knows how to properly celebrate genius. I still had to take a full star off just for that annoying laugh (I watched the director’s cut which meant it went on for another 20 minutes).

Deliverance 1972
The most intense canoe movie of all time? Boorman serves a raw nature vs man thriller examining masculinity under extreme duress. The fact that the studio wanted to kill the movie, refusing to offer stunt doubles and accident insurance turned out to be well-earned blessing in disguise. Just proves how practical effects and choreography feel so much more intimate. Despite the slow start, Deliverance really grows on you as it unfolds.
