Much like EILEEN from last year, this movie is focused around a couple of shall-we-say bold acting performances that in less capable directing hands would land cartoonishly or stand out as laughable. Somehow, Nichols is able to construct a vessel that contains that juice without leaking. In my opinion, Comer and Hardy are terrific.
As for Butler, I've come to appreciate his workmanlike approach. He exists in this movie mostly to be objectified but does it without willfully drawing attention.…
Just from an “objective” standpoint: all of the apparent goals of this movie, everything he intends to do, is achieved at an untouchably elite level. The production design, the camera, the score, the acting, the flourishes, and the exploration of the dramatic questions. You would be hard pressed to identify failures, shortcomings, or aspects that don’t “work” in any of those elements. Everything he is trying to do, he is succeeding at. And at a virtuosic level.

Extremely meh. Deniro cools it with the wackadoo accent in the second half and it gets a little better. Half ass voiceover. The story doesn’t build, it just kind of decides to be done at a certain point.
