I never rewatch stuff, but if you haven’t seen something since you were a sleepy junior high kid in 1999, you haven’t seen it. God-tier Broadbent performance, probably his career best (high praise). An incredibly entertaining and honest look at what it takes in this Business we call Show: the self-doubt, the fear of complacency, the camaraderie, the search for collaborators, the short-lived sense of achievement, the sound of applause, the moment of clarity, and the will - the endless search - to begin again.

People revere this (five star city out here): I liked it but thought it merely a very solid Hollywood cesspool story bolstered by a great Douglas performance. I like the message of the ending - that we are tempted (often doomed) to forgive annoying collaborators and difficult dynamos, but none of the characters felt fully whole despite some great scenes (love the dad’s funeral).

Offensive in its juxtaposition, in addition to just being dull / condescending in composition. We were all children once, pour quoi? Arthouse can be as idiotic as any blockbuster when it works hard enough. To paraphrase the old joke about what’s done in Jesus’ name, Vigo would never stop throwing up if he saw this.

OK! Gonna try to both stay spoiler-free and defend this one. I’ve read almost none of the gossipy hoopla about this film and avoided reviews until I could see it, so apologies if some op-ed out there’s already outwitted me on all possible counts. But first, because this is Letterboxd, here’s my short, pedantic preamble about the state of the film industry.

We want Hollywood to produce more original concept A-list movies with big stars, budgets, ideas. We want them…
