  Unlike John Carney’s other movies, the music in this one just kind of sucks. That’s really the main problem. The magic isn’t there.

  Also, JGL’s weirdly gatekeep-y guitar teacher says women don’t want to hear the words “you’re beautiful” so directly in a song, but I’m pretty sure nobody wants to hear the words “Topanga Canyon” in a song either. And it’s kind of bizarre to hear out-of-touch old guy jokes about being “canceled” or not being “allowed to say that anymore” coming from relatively young actors.
