I love how this movie looks, the New York setting, the city lights, the bridges, the subway tracks, everything is so well-shot and it looks so gritty and dirty, it creates the perfect film-noir atmosphere. The many cat-and-mouse games with the cops following the criminals and that INCREDIBLE car chase that's probably better than most modern ones, these things all contribute to this being a masterpiece in my opinion. Looking a bit deeper, The French Connection, is a movie about…

Dune 1984
This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.
Aside from the incredible production design and some cool visuals... yeah nobody's perfect. I won't harp on the CGI for too long because it is a bit unfair, considering when this came out, but holy shit that protective training suit looked RIDICULOUS. Nosferatu 2024
It seems to me that Eggers last two films, while visually striking, lack in emotional stakes and true character development. The first half is carried by some effective scares and some impressive visual flair, but as the movie continues, it loses steam and it is revealed to us just how little we care about these characters. The second half does have moments and specific scenes that leave an impact, but it's glaringly obvious that these characters are mostly carried by good performances and this movie as a whole is mostly carried by a visual style that isn't strong enough to sustain it.

The Substance 2024
While it starts of strong; nicely stylized, well shot and acted, it doesn't amount to anything that wasn't abudantly clear from the first 5 minutes. It makes a point, repeats for almost 2 and a half hours and culminates in a, sometimes fun, sometimes stupid, gore-fest. Its style can only get it so far when the substance of it (oops) is that surface-level. I admire it for taking big swings but I don't think it quite stuck the landing.
