Paul Hunham is a lot like me except instead of spouting random unwanted historical facts at every social gathering it’s anecdotes about the gen x auteurs

Came down with a nasty head cold the same weekend my parents came to visit so I ended up throwing this on for their last afternoon now that they’ve experienced most of the sights/sounds so lovingly transposed and recreated here. Increasingly I find it difficult to love any Tarantino movie without a caveat of some kind, here it would be the Bruce Lee stuff (or the possibly dicey female characters, pick your poison) but I’m becoming comfortable calling this his best. It’s a real magic trick of a movie that I find infinitely rewatchable and continuously rewarding. Rick fucking Dalton!

Like the best Linklater’s: funny, effortless, philosophical, and quietly sad. Powell throwing fastballs the whole time.

Not my preferred mode of Bong but this is a blast! I’d be lying if I said I enjoyed all parts of it equally but he’s such a gifted visual artist and the cast is so game for this wavelength of wacky hijinks that as soon as I was getting tired of a scene we were onto the next thing. It’s definitely scatterbrained and inconsistent but sometimes that’s what a big swing gets ya! I’d take 30 of these over 90% of whatever else Hollywood is doing.

The American dream is an illusion, paid for and sold by the 1% to delude us into thinking if we work hard enough eventually they’ll let us into their club. The only solace we have is that when they’re dead and forgotten, our art will stand: a monument to perseverance. Happy New Year!
