Watched in honor of Gene’s passing
I can see how this ushered in a new era of western that deconstructed the idealization of the cowboy lifestyle, which is a feat that goes unrecognized as the new era becomes the norm. Obviously Gene, Morgan, and Clint were excellent as usual. I enjoyed Clint’s return to his former heroic persona to avenge his friend at the end, but at the same time the way he so easily reprised that role felt like…
I feel like this is BDSM/kink culture *lite* for mainstream media. It was enjoyable and sexy. My biggest complaint is how consent was portrayed: ”I want to make sure you consent to this…or else I’ll blackmail you” um?
Nicole Kidman honestly did an incredible job; unfortunately she reminded me a lot of my old boss who I hated and really do not want to imagine in a kinky relationship.
So many lovable characters in this movie. The shot of Richie’s hair and blood mixed in the sink was brilliant and will probably stay in my brain forever.
Side note about Wes Anderson films: I feel like they explicitly draw attention to the fact that they are stories, whereas most other movies want you to get sucked into them as a temporary reality. That quality is sometimes jarring to me, but I think it’s just because it’s so unique. Out of the WA films I’ve seen, this was definitely my favorite.

This film so beautifully portrays the feeling of loss and regret that often accompanies aging and family dysfunction. For the viewer, however, this sense of loss is cushioned within the deeply caring friendships between these 4 men. Although they engage in risky antics and make questionable decisions, there is a sense of safety that comes from the knowledge that these men will love and protect one another, come what may. It is lovely to see these men learn about themselves…
