Heretic 2024
This wasn’t anything groundbreaking, and the religious tropes have been explored before and will undoubtedly be again. However, the performances were fantastic, particularly by Hugh Grant but also from Sophie Thatcher and Chloe East — enough to keep you guessing and engaged throughout. The writing was clever, and really shone through Grant’s monologues, and the set design was well thought out, with the miniature model version a nice little added touch. This isn’t going to leave any long-lasting impressions — the bits questioning a higher power may resonate with some, but some aspects felt trite. Still, this was an all around an enjoyable film.

Beau Is Afraid 2023
What a long, strange trip! Sigmund Freud would’ve given this one a chef’s kiss. This three-hour odyssey is a panic attack on mushrooms or a fever dream. Really enjoyed Aster’s direction, set designs and world building. He is an auteur, and Joaquin Phoenix is a master. What I haven’t really been enjoying is the trend over the past two years of films running over three hours. This could’ve been cut down a bit and it perhaps would’ve packed even more of a punch.
