It was true to life. pimply, often unkind, deeply insecure, validation seeking, mom hating life. all of the shitty parts of being a sad shameful teenager — especially one that’s deeply uncomfortable with his own Chinese self. I loved seeing everything that was familiar. The set is a wonder in every way. did the director peer into my life and see the old suburban homes there? Chris’s mom, played by Joan Chen, is totally the standout to me. But…………… this…
this movie was unreal. I should have known that luca guadagno and zendaya would work some magic together but every expectation fell out of the sky.
the chemistry! the pacing! the score! the utterly perfect casting -- like of course josh o' connor is a sleazy charismatic asshole and not the bumbling englishman; and of course zendaya cares about nothing like she does about tennsi!! this was a masterpiece and the wonders this is going to do for tennis tournament ticket sales>>>
my mom and I were literally so confused watching this but once I let go of my endless desire to understand the plot line, I sat back and just enjoyed the lovely technicolor cinematography and the vibrant, wildly vivid characters. The vibes were so so so good although I strongly believe Faye was kind of a nut case. still don’t get how these two stories are really related but not really knowing where this movie was going was actually quite fun.
