Even Rachel Zegler’s significant gifts can’t overcome the abysmal script and direction. My word. Each scene hops to the next with no attempt at real character growth or narrative cohesion. The new musical numbers themselves were surprisingly decent— or maybe Zegler was that good at singing? Whatever the case, they were much better than Disney’s fare in recent years; just sucks that they (and the cute albeit underdeveloped knockoff Flynn/Rapunzel romance) were wasted on whatever this is. Let’s not get started on Gal Gadot.
(Oh, just learned that Pasek & Paul and Lizzy McAlpine were involved in songwriting. That explains why the music wasn’t awful.)
So lovely. Treats people going through transitions in their lives with so much care and compassion, it was almost inspirational in a way. I love stories about people making each other better through kindness.
This adaptation really went all out with the idiots to lovers energy and I for one was DELIGHTED. All of the longing glances...the absolute pining of it all...the refusal to admit their attraction to each other until they were practically drowning themselves by doing so...Emma and Knightley were such disasters in this, I can't believe they even made it to the end. Ms. de Wilde really gets it. Can't wait to see what else she does in her career.
