All We Imagine as Light 2024
The kind of film that has film critics sharpening their "The city is also a character" lines.
Combines the tenderness of Malayalam new wave with Apichatphong-esque uncanny. Love how it's depictions of intimacies never becomes bogged down by the ever encroaching alienation of the city. But rather it's steady hum becomes the music of companionship. This is the kind of film you want to wrap around yourself like a quilt at night.Translated from by -
Nickel Boys 2024
Formally quite interesting, but personally never been a fan of the first person perspective. The film, quite necessarily, doesn't stick to it rigorously, using close-ups and blocking to undercut some of the disorientation caused by the pov. What it enhances is the intense proximity of bodies, both intimacies and violence, the closeness and turning away.
