Tempted to give this a perfect score solely because of how clever the concept is, but the stiffness of the dialogue brings it down. I especially noticed it when Dom speaks to his kids on the phone, although my mum thinks that this is just Leo’s awkward acting as a decidedly childless guy. On another note, I’m not usually an advocate for action sequences or violence, but having them take place while everyone’s on skis makes them seem fucking cool.

Uncut Gems 2019
Second watch but it still left me with as much adrenaline as the first, even though I knew what was coming. I had, however, completely forgotten that they’d snuck in some socio-political commentary at the start and through KG, so adding the last half star for that. Julia is such a queen 🫶

Everything about this is corny - the performances, the accents, the dialogue, the excessive number of plot ‘twists,’ and especially the fact that it’s a story about magicians

Poor Things 2023
Conflicted about this one because it was really enjoyable to watch and reminded me of Titane, which has a special place in my heart. The concept at its core and how painfully obvious it was that men conceived, wrote, and directed it, however, was deeply, distractingly fucked up. As BBC’s Samira Ahmed put it, ‘just because a woman chooses to do something, does not make the act feminist.’
