My god, I’ve never been more patriotic than this.
This film made me stand straight up like the Manchurian candidate and scream at the top of my lungs “USA! USA! USA!”
The inhabitants of the apartment next door were not feeling as patriotic, as they banged on the connecting wall in an attempt to silence my vigor.
But nothing can stop me feeling the passion I feel after seeing this incredible edit of rediscovered 70mm film shot by MGM cinematographers.
It really does make you think though…MGM produced many of Kubrick’s films…
Bradley Cooper succeeds where most fail. This biopic depicts Leonard Bernstein as a complex and talented artist whose lifestyle often alienates those he loves most. While this isn’t an entirely new premise, Cooper (Writer, Director, and Star) succeeds by embracing the intricacy of humanity. While Bernstein clearly led a difficult, yet successful life, he comes face to face with mortality, loneliness, and passion. During his depiction, Cooper doesn’t pretend to slap any moral or cultural labels on Bernstein, giving the viewer the opportunity to draw their own conclusions.
While certainly topping all Transformers movies preceding it with skillful cinematography, decent acting, and a few truly moving/comedic moments, Bumblebee leans too heavily on nostalgia, attempting to distract from a half-baked screenplay and underwhelming coming-of-age story.
