The Brave One 1956
All I really knew about this going in is that it was written by Trumbo under a pseudo name, inspired by his exile in Mexico. The scenery really shows that; monuments and landscapes feel walked-in. The story itself was a bit thin and dull. Basically Old Yeller in Mexico with a bull. And the president of Mexico saves the day? The president portrayed is Benito Pablo Juárez García, the first democratically-elected indigenous president of Mexico. The whole film seems incredibly bent against bureaucracy and government power, perhaps an attempt by Trumbo to distance himself from the communist party.

Point a camera at Michael Gira and the band. They’ll take it from there.
