Still such an adorable film. Slight, to be sure. But beautiful and properly romantic. With two gorgeous central performances. Sadly and stupidly underrated.
This might just be my favourite Anderson film.
Weakness in cartography: the curse of the homosexual.
Brilliant!
A sublime example of that most misunderstood (and maligned) genre: the silent melodrama.
Beautifully made. Painterly. With wonderful sets and photography. Janet Gaynor is so charismatic and her performance so wholehearted. The narrative is admittedly old-school sexist, which is a shame. Otherwise a glorious little gem.
What a joyous and gently (but firmly) angry pic. Cheryl Dunye is so hugely charismatic. I really, really liked this little movie. Although I wasn’t totally convinced by the recreations of 1930s cinema. Not quite as on-point as the rest of the film (or for that matter, the still recreations). Nonetheless, Further evidence that great cinema doesn’t require polish or budget. Important stuff. In memory of Fae Richards (may she rest in fiction).
PS and it was damn funny too!
