Glad I finally got around to this one, it’s definitely one of Villeneuve’s best in my opinion. Cool how long he spends on the deciphering of the language itself, and showing the process of how difficult it would be. Overall, the tone felt about as real and grounded as you can get for a movie about the arrival of aliens. That made the emotional through-line really work. The soundtrack is also amazing.

The Perks of Being a Wallflower 2012
I know I’m a sucker for coming-of-age dramas, but this was still great. Weird seeing it now and remembering friends talk about the book back in middle school. While I thankfully can’t relate personally to Charlie’s trauma, I can relate very much to a lot of other aspects of his early high school experience which might’ve amplified my enjoyment of this. Held up on rewatch. Noticed a lot more little details this time since I was using less brain power figuring out the actual plot. The hard messy cuts that seemed jarring initially felt a lot more fitting, knowing Lenny’s mental state. Also a really cool use of color, this movie is still the goat.
