Taste of Cherry 1997
There’s a moment where Badii describes his current surroundings as beautiful, to which the security guard who works in such surroundings and is in conversation with Badii, dismisses it merely as ‘dirt’. This, in a way, summarises the beauty of Taste of Cherry for me. Visually, it rarely strays from its palette that consists of differing shades of yellow and orange, that of the desert environment that makes up the setting for the majority of the film’s runtime. In literal terms,…

Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters 1985
Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters commands an utter fascination at the life and character of the titular man it studies, crafting complete exposure to the inner depths of his mind. Yukio Mishima has been regarded as the first Japanese ‘Superstar’ in regards to his fame within Japan, however you would be utterly mistaken to think of him as uncontroversial, being an intensely polarising figure due to his right-wing, ultranationalist politics, disdain for modernity and, perhaps most of all, his…

Mickey 17 2025
Not my favourite from Bong Joon Ho, which was to be expected, however Mickey 17 does prove to be both an undeniably entertaining ride and an effective anti-capitalist commentary, as is the case with much of its director’s other work. Mark Ruffalo as the deliberately unsubtle Trump caricature would probably be my highlight, with his character being full of humorous chaos as the incompetent yet egotistical politician (do refer back to ‘unsubtle’, although not a criticism as this is what…

Dog Eat Dog 2016
A stylistically-incoherent mess that truly pales in comparison to Schrader’s masterpieces, such as Mishima and Affliction. The dialogue is poor, the story is half-baked and there is a complete lack of any consistent vision. Other than a rare funny line or interesting use of colour, Dog Eat Dog completely falls apart in a wholly disappointing fashion considering the repeatedly-proven talent of its director, that seems all but missing from here. Without Willem Dafoe I would have probably liked this even less.

Harakiri 1962
Near-satirical tale of the samurai honour code, and the extensive issues with holding ‘honour’ above all else. Wasn’t expecting it going in, but I found this utterly hilarious, with, as far as I am aware, none of the hilarities to be found in the dialogue lost in translation. Outside of the dialogue, much of the humour can be found amongst the almost extreme facial expressions on offer, great examples of the expressive physicality that makes up the performances, particularly that…

The Monkey 2025
A few fairly creative kills and one or two funny transitions is honestly all there is of any semblance of enjoyment or worth here. It really says a lot about a film when it would be improved by being merely a five minute highlight reel of the few good moments, instead of an hour and a half drag. The constant exposition through dialogue proves just how weak the writing is, with a complete lack of faith in the audience for…
