in 2018, Spider-Man: Into The Spiderverse changed mainstream animation forever, hewing to the philosophy of “if it ain’t broke, break it”*. even among an oversaturated market and a general cultural fatigue with superhero media, Spiderverse always seemed to be the exception that proved the rule. Now, in 2023, Across the Spiderverse more than lives up to the legacy of its predecessor, smashing my already high expectations. a technical marvel and a heartfelt, utterly compelling narrative dripping with character and creativity and fun.
