    The Book of Clarence

    ★★★★

The Book of Clarence is an ambitious, often trenchantly funny, and sometimes muddled film. There is a lot to unpack around the themes of doubles/multiples and the creation of history/myth/image, as well as the inspired casting of the Romans as white and everyone else subjected to their rule as Black. However, the film’s depiction of women leaves a lot to be desired.

Mary Magdalene transforms from a free-spirited, horse-racing badass who shares her winnings with the poor to someone who…

    1. “Long story short, theater gave my mom a coma.”
    2. “Cishet bitch!”
    3. I love Patti Harrison’s weirdness. (You deserve better than Stuart Little—call me!)
    4. Does Ayo Edebiri sleep?
    5. Jimmy Tatro, keep doing what you’re doing.
    6. All the child actors were amazing.
    7. I miss nerd camp.

Beardless Zach Galifianakis crying, “I’m—I’m the child. I need to be taken care of” and “Hold me like I’m a little boy.” Ugh, I’ve never been so turned off.

Also, Geraldine Viswanathan needs to be in more things because she is amazing.

Trent Reznor, you don’t have to do every soundtrack.

    Gorge what is un-gorgable.

Holy crap, the tagline to this miniseries is “Bound by slavery. Freed by love.” Who thought this disgusting white supremacist garbage was a good idea?

Oh wow, this movie just hits all the right buttons for me. Weird and bleak and funny and Kristen Stewart. YouTube outlasting humanity by a billion years sounds about right. Love the opening montage that condenses five billion years of Earth history into seconds. Love the cosmic scale to tell a small but impossible love story that feels real. (Ugh, did this movie get any marketing at all? It deserves more attention!)
