Quality aside, the Alien series has always lended itself to giving its directors the freedom to make bold creative choices in line with their own unique sensibilities (from Ridley Scott to yep, even Joss Whedon 😆). I’m not familiar with Fede Álvarez and his strengths but this may have done him a disservice. There wasn’t even a hint of spice on display! It relied heavily on calling back previous rules and events (with some weird distortions) within the series’ universe.…

This was so dull and unrealistic, not in the plausible sense but in that everyone moved through sequences with no interiority or genuine emotion. The non-linear setup seemed neat but so distracting that I spent too much time figuring out how the plots would gel together. The trick also undercut certain beats. When they were replayed and recontextualized, the dramatic tension was completely sapped. I appreciated some of the visuals (I loved all the Ace Combat featuring Tom Hardy stuff 🛩️ ). Still, the direction wasn’t that imaginative (possibly a limitation of the format). And Zimmer’s score??! Dude really phoned this one in. 😕

The film is stuck between sincere, earnest drama and satire and fails at both. I hoped it would be insightful about how the book industry (and more broadly, entertainment and media) views and commodifies the black experience and how black creatives navigate within them. Unfortunately, the film is only interested in pointing out and dunking on the obvious, which feels pandering. For a film that claims to be “tired” of stereotypes pumped out and reflected by the entertainment industries, it’s…

This film was so genuine and unlike anything I've seen before. It's a character study played out through a string of pieces, each with distinct and deep ideas. Yet, they flow well thanks to Wendell B. Harris Jr.'s incredible performance and sensibilities in front and behind the camera. The editing is bananas. Subway-like transitions, unexpected freeze frames, audio and vocal distortions, and the closing credit sequences were all so frantic it felt like a live feed of the lead character's…
