It's as if the director focused on the best parts of Heat to summarily jettison, then watched 300 and decided that there just wasnt enough testosterone flowing through Gerard Butler as a comical Hellene, and decided on a mashup. Give me Triple Frontier or Zero Dark Thirty instead for a more authentic representation of domestic machismo clothed in fatigues.
This is a charming pre-code picture with a believable central combo, minimal melodrama, and something of a fatalistic ending that wouldn’t have been allowable even two years subsequent to ‘32. A film that I think is ripe for re-imagining and exploration by a confident modern filmmaker, as long as the charm doesn’t devolve into schmaltz.

I don’t know what to make of this film, or its director for that matter (I watched The Childhood of a Leader the morning prior to better familiarize myself with his past work; I haven’t seen Vox Lux). The ambition is there, but after primary viewing it strikes as a good, not great, rendition of the ever-so-valid immigrants’ tale. There are some puzzling narrative shifts here, especially in the second act, and it occasionally feels like a series of scenes…
