This is a truly underrated film with enviable mise-en-scene. And Julianne Moore is excellent so early in her career. But an absolutely brilliant first half slows down a bit in the second half, with a few scenes that feel unnecessary to plot development. Still, it needs to be seen so much more than it has been. Excellent atmospheric film!

This was one of the better behind the scenes docs I have seen; so comprehensive from the beginning of the process to the end. And so invaluable to a filmmaker (and fan)! I particularly enjoyed hearing Rian’s journey of warming up to digital, and his DP’s argument for why it is important actually persuaded me as well. Hearing how much the actors resonated with the script, the scoring and sound mixing process, and the gels on the windows day-for-night tricks…
The first ever dance-induced anxiety attack film that also devolves into the most horrific nightmare I’ve ever had while awake? Yep.
Not sure if I like it or hate it right now but, either way, I respect the heck out of it for what it achieved and how it made me feel and how committed the actors were.
