That people are calling this "elevated horror" is a farce. Mostly frustrating and agonizing to watch, mostly because of severe boredom. Muddles its own message on top of that (is the true horror supposed to be of religion and people turning on their own family because of it? if so why are the religious nuts right about there being witches in the first place?). Only somewhat redeemed by its excellent performances, impeccable shot composition and unusual score.

Providence 1977
Exceedingly strange, unnerving, sometimes beautiful film ; every shot is vaporous and your ears feel dampened with cotton. No external sounds but the dialogue and the music, outsides feel dead, only occasionally troubled by the ghoulish sound of explosions and gunfire. Interiors warp in unconventional ways, a single patio opens to three different locations, all different yet similarly otherworldly. Multiple characters embodied in a single one, personalities split and shared between actors. The effect isn't dizzying as much as hypnotic, and confusing. A wonderfully cinematic evocation of dreamlike spaces.

Millennium Actress 2001
Finally seeing this in a theater for the first time is a privilege (considering how rare this film is) and rediscovering it on the big screen drives home how emotionally powerful and direct this film is.
Easily Kon's simplest story, yet told in a sumptuously exhilarating way, without unnecessary artifice and nary a second of wasted time. The kaleidoscopic prism of history, both of Japanese cinema and the country itself, interwoven with the deeply entrancing yet disarmingly simple life story…

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse 2018
First rewatch, confirming my initial thoughts on the matter, that this is pretty much the best Marvel film of the current era, easily the best one since … well Sam Raimi's Spiderman 2. Funny how that works.
