Velvet Goldmine 1998
Maybe Todd Haynes’s best imo. All music biopics should be like this: abstract, sweaty, colorful, expressionistic extended music videos with like 200 rack zooms. The Oscar Wilde magic alien gemstone is controversial but I think it’s perfect. This movie is like if Megalopolis was good.

Really loved this! I’ve always had a soft spot for heartfelt sci-fi so this is right up my alley personally. Just a good premise executed well. I’ve also been a MLP fan since Weeds and she never disappoints. She’s got the humor and the depth and her and Ayo’s scenes are really sweet. The rest of the family felt underwritten, and in the beginning it seemed like they were trying for some “offbeat dark humor” circa 2011, but overall the story lands. I’ll be thinking about Nano Man for a while.
